Artist’s Statement
Chung Hee-Kyung
I try to use as many colors as possible in my work, like a rainbow carrying so many lights in it. As the lights in the rainbow sing hope, so the lights in my works I wish to carry hope, love, and beauty. The lights seemingly come to life and whisper to us, “Be thankful, still be thankful, be grateful nevertheless, love one another, and rejoice more.”
My first series of Under the Wings depict Great Love through simplified wings. They will tell you that how hard and difficult life might be, we can be always at peace and ease under the wings of an angel. Like chicks going around but gathering under the hen in danger. Under the wings is always so peaceful and calm that we can rest and get new strength to live on there. I tried to show such peace, warmth, enjoyment, and satisfaction in the Under the Wings series.
My Wings have got brighter since then, which represent the relationship with other people. Colors are affected in their tones and functions by other colors put around. So are people influencing and influenced by others, growing together, not alone.
In my recent works, I expressed the wings more cheerfully and diversely using new techniques, which would be an attempt to reflect this time of ours. The wings would go through creative changes as we move on.
Why do I paint? This is the question I frequently ask to myself. The answer amazingly comes from the mouths of the children I teach at a local school. They say, “Do I paint ‘beautifully’?”, “Please give hope and dream to people with good paintings.” Right! I paint ‘beautifully’ so that people can be healed, get comfort and rest, get energy, and feel joy. This is the force that leads me to the canvas and pick up the brush today, though the work is not an easy one at all.
There is one thing I make sure to keep in my paintings. This is the Life that is living and breathing. I always try to keep it alive in the paintings I draw, no matter how well it may be felt. I draw, praying that my small movement could make a good present box for everybody.
